Wheel alignment in the Fraser Valley: signs you need one and what a shop checks
A car that pulls, a crooked steering wheel or tires wearing on one edge usually point to alignment. Here's what the angles mean, when to have them checked and what to ask for.

- Book an alignment check if the car pulls, the steering wheel is off centre, or a tire is wearing on one edge.
- Have it checked once a year and when new tires go on, which is what Michelin says most manufacturers recommend.
- After a hard pothole or curb hit, get it checked soon. Misalignment wears new tread quickly.
Signs your car needs an alignment
Bridgestone lists four common signs: uneven tread wear, the car pulling to the left or right, a steering wheel that sits off centre when you’re driving straight, and steering wheel vibration. Michelin Canada adds uneven or fast wear on the inside or outside edges of a tire.
Some of these have other causes. A pull can come from one under-inflated tire, so check all four pressures before booking. A vibration can also come from a wheel that’s out of balance. Edge wear and a crooked steering wheel are the clearest pointers to alignment.
What the angles mean
An alignment measures and adjusts three main angles. A shop’s printout will show each one before and after, against the range your vehicle’s maker allows.
| What it is | When it’s out | |
|---|---|---|
| Toe | Whether the tires point inward or outward, seen from above | Feathered tread across the tire |
| Camber | The inward or outward tilt of the tire, seen from the front | Wear on the inside or outside edge |
| Caster | The angle of the steering axis, seen from the side | Changes in steering feel and stability |
Bridgestone says feathering, where the tread ribs are smooth on one side and sharp on the other, is usually a sign of poor toe alignment. Camber wear shows up as one edge of the tire wearing faster than the rest.
What knocks alignment out
Firestone lists collisions, potholes, running into a curb and normal wear over time as the common causes. Michelin Canada also points to freeze-thaw cycles, which open potholes and heave pavement. A single hard hit can be enough, so pay attention to how the car drives afterward.
New suspension parts are another cause. Monroe recommends an alignment whenever struts or other steering and suspension parts are replaced, and new parts can change the ride height enough to move the angles.
Two-wheel, thrust and four-wheel alignments
A front-end or two-wheel alignment adjusts only the front steering and suspension. A four-wheel alignment includes the front plus an adjustment of the rear suspension. On vehicles with a solid rear axle, Firestone says the thrust angle is checked and adjusted if needed so all four wheels point straight ahead.
The USTMA’s tire care guide notes that a four-wheel alignment can find problems such as dog tracking, where the rear tires don’t follow the front ones. Ask which type your vehicle needs and what the quote includes.
What to ask when you book
The tire shop directory shows which Abbotsford-area shops list wheel alignments. Ask whether the price covers a two-wheel or four-wheel alignment, and whether it includes a printout showing the angles before and after. That printout is your evidence that something was adjusted, and it gives you a record to compare next year.
If a shop says tie rods, ball joints or other parts are worn, ask to see the part or a photo of it, and get a price before any extra work goes ahead. Consumer Protection BC says the auto repair industry in BC isn’t regulated, so ask for a written quote and ask the shop to call you before going over it.
Questions people ask
How often should I get my alignment checked?
Michelin says most manufacturers recommend checking alignment once a year, and it's worth confirming when new tires go on. Check your owner's manual for your vehicle's schedule, and book sooner if the car starts pulling or the steering wheel sits off centre.
Is a wheel alignment the same as wheel balancing?
No. Alignment sets the angles of the wheels relative to the car and each other. Balancing adds small weights so each tire and wheel spins without vibrating. Michelin Canada covers both on one page because they're often done at the same visit. A pull or uneven edge wear points to alignment.
Will the city pay if a pothole knocked my alignment out?
Not automatically. The City of Abbotsford says it is not legally responsible for keeping roads free of potholes, but it does accept claims, which must be made within two months of the damage. Highway 1, Highway 11, Sumas Way and the highway ramps are provincial, so claims for those go to the BC transportation ministry. Talk to your insurer too.
Do I need an alignment after replacing suspension parts?
Usually, yes. Monroe recommends an alignment whenever struts or other steering and suspension parts are replaced, because new parts can change the vehicle's ride height and angles.
